Breaking Free from Diet Culture: Embracing Food Freedom and Body Respect in Sports

If you’re here, it’s probably because you currently are or once were an athlete who’s been through a doozy of a time with your identity, food, ~eXerCisE~, and your body. Maybe you were never an “athlete” per say, but you’d definitely describe your time with food and body as a doozy. Or, perhaps more accurately, a dumpster fire.


I get it - before I became an anti-diet dietitian and created this snazzy website, I was once a scholarship D-1 student-athlete and went through the wringer with my own eating disorder. After a lot of trial and error, I managed to come out the other side. Been there, done that, got the damn T-shirt. And let me tell you, it’s been one hell of a wild ride. As a sports dietitian who’s kicked an eating disorder in the ass and out the door of my own mind and now helps athletes and retired athletes do the same, I’ve seen enough bullshit to last a lifetime.


So let’s talk about this somewhat amorphous bastard we call “diet culture” and how it rears its ugly head in sports. It looks like...


ordering a cheese-less, condiment-less (except maybe mustard), joy-less sandwich when out for lunch with teammates for fear of eating too much, not eating "like an athlete," being perceived as "undisciplined," or feeling judged by your team;


insisting on wearing baggy, extra, or unnecessary clothing to practice, despite the heat and intense workouts, because you’re self-conscious that your body doesn’t look like what you’ve been made to believe an athlete “should” look like;


almost having a tantrum in the middle of the grocery store because you can’t find non-fat mayo (??? this food product doesn’t even make sense lol but I have definitely been here before, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯);


valuing your body composition and/or weight more than your actual athletic performance, health, or personhood outside of athleticism.


In short, it makes you believe that you’ve gotta look a certain way, eat certain things, and fit into a very small, neurotically designed, very uncomfy (and exclusive!) proverbial box to be a 'real' athlete. But here’s the kicker – that’s a load of bullshit.


The sad and frustrating thing is, nobody is immune to these beliefs - just one reason why the U.S. diet industry made $160 billion in 2022 and that number is expected to keep climbing. Most athletes become athletes because they want to be the best and they’re willing to do whatever it takes to make that happen - even if it means damaging their bodies - and, at some point, aesthetics gets mistaken for athleticism because objectification, which is a story for another time. I remember this all too well.


Back in my competing days, I was still asleep in The Diet Culture Matrix and very much all in on this mentality. As a budding ~*RD2BE*~, I also felt the need to project my black and white mentality toward food onto those I cared about, because I genuinely thought I was helping. And thus the road to hell is paved…but, we don’t know what we don’t know. And all I knew at that point was, unfortunately, old-school and out-dated sport & nutrition dogma.


Counting every calorie, obsessively attributing my performance to my body weight, always feeling like I was never quite ‘enough,’ and swinging between restricting and bingeing more frequently than I was losing toe nails (this happens quite often for distance runners, soznotsoz). It sucked. Big time. It was exhausting and, frankly, soul-crushing. Once I had hip surgery the summer before my senior year of college, physical restriction lessened but mental restriction and bingeing reached an all-time high.


It wasn’t until after I graduated, after I distanced myself from the pressures of sport and academia, body comp testing, spandex, and people on my team who had their own issues to sort through, that something clicked. I spent a year in the woods remembering how to human again, which is another story for another time, and I realized that my worth as an athlete (and, let’s be real, as a human bean) wasn’t tied to a number on a scale or the size of my jeans or even if I was still running or considered a “runner.” Mind-blowing, right?


Now, as a dietitian helping athletes and retired athletes who’ve had their fair share of battles with disordered eating and body dysmorphia, I’ve seen it all. The pressure to win, conform, and constantly compare and “be better than” in sports is real and somewhat necessary, because winning is kind of the point, but it can do a number on your mental and physical health if left unchecked and prioritized above all else.


Here’s my unfiltered take:

1. Your Body, Your Rules: No one, and I mean no one, gets to dictate what your body should look like or how you should treat it. Your body is your business. Full stop. This can be tricky to navigate in certain aesthetic or weight-class sports - gymnastics, dance, figure-skating, wrestling, rowing, boxing, and even football come to mind - that put a significant emphasis on body weight and correlate it with performance. Endurance athletes experience this as well. I think the only sport that may be untouched by body expectations is ping pong, but I’ve never worked with a competitive ping pong-er, so that remains open to debate.


2. Intuitive Eating Is An [very realistic and attainable] Option: Despite what you may have heard, intuitive eating isn’t some hippie-dippie fad and it most certainly is attainable for athletes once they have a thorough understanding of what it actually is. It’s about listening to your body, considering practical situations, and making the most informed decision in the moment. It’s liberating as hell, trust me, and I wish somebody told me about it when I was competing. Knowing what to eat as an athlete is not hard. Maintaining a “healthy” relationship with food while competing and upon sport retirement most certainly is. There’s a lot more to say on this topic, so expect a separate post about it soon-ish.


3. Find Joy in Movement Again: Do you remember how you talked about your sport when you first started? What the root of your interest in it was? It was probably play, or something similar. I know my love for running stemmed from playing tag with friends and running through the fields and woods of England as part of PE class. Yes, it was as muddy as it sounds. To quote a phrase that became popular several years ago but has seemingly been forgotten, “exercise is a celebration of what your body can do, not a punishment for what you ate.” Movement is about feeling alive, powerful, and fucking fantastic. It has so many functions outside of fitness and muscle tone, and to reduce it to anything less is a slap in the face to the heart of sport.


4. To Hell with the ‘Ideal Athlete’ Image: If you haven’t heard yet, BMI is BS and athletes come in all shapes and sizes. Anyone who tells you otherwise can take a very long, sandy, bug-infested hike. Your strength and skill never were, and still are not, defined by your appearance or *dare I say it* body comp.


5. Mental Health, Just Like Physical Health, is Non-Negotiable: Competing is the athlete’s choice. Just like it is an athlete’s choice to compete with a twisted ankle, it is also their choice to not compete on a fucked ankle. In a similar vein, it’s an athlete’s choice to pursue competitive sport. It does entail a LOT of mental effort, discipline, compromise, resilience, and growth. You have to do things you don’t always want to do. You have to be willing to push yourself further than you thought possible, and most people need a coach to help them get there. Ya just do. That being said, you can’t perform your best if your head isn’t in the game. And, just like I would hope athletes are getting support and treatment for their physical injuries, I hope just as much that they are also able to get support and treatment for their mental injuries with the same gravity as their physical ones. Mental health is as important as physical health. Period. Doesn’t really matter how much protein you’re eating if the monkeys upstairs are wreaking havoc.


6. Do Something Different: For all that is holy and good and smothered in cheese, try your best not to make your sport your whole personality. Putting those proverbial eggs all in one basket may make you feel special and important and dedicated and whatever else your ego is telling you, but I promise it does way more harm than good long-term. If you're anything like me, you probably believe the golden years as an athlete will/would never end and you take it as a challenge when someone like me tells you that they inevitably will. Just like tendinitis, it comes for all of us at some point. So, you have two options: 1) live in denial, be woefully unprepared when that day does finally come, and try to deal by going back to a sport that you have outgrown and vice versa or project your grief into a book where you make the questionable decision to quote your diary at the start of each chapter, OR 2) embrace the freedom and beauty of the world and your personhood outside of sport and the athlete label. Make time for and nurture your other interests, even if only for an hour a week, so that you don't pigeon-hole yourself into one definition that does eventually fade. Get excited about other stuff and let that stuff add value to your life - not detract from how much you care about your sport.


Bottom line: It’s high time we kick diet culture out of sports. This isn’t about rebelling for the sake of rebelling or giving up on being your best. It’s about respect – for our bodies, our mental health, and our love for the sport we each fell in love with once upon a time. It’s about redefining what ‘best’ means. It’s about being healthy, happy, and whole – in whatever form that takes for you.


Let’s redefine what it means to be an athlete, a retired athlete, and a human bean on our own damn terms. Bodies of all shapes, sizes, and abilities, united by a love for sport and a big, firm middle finger to diet culture, trying to do something we love in the bodies we have.


TL;DR: Food is more than fuel, you are more than a body, and life is more than sport.

Let's chat about something that's a bit like retiring your favorite pair of yoga pants - uncomfy, a little strange, but eventually, a step towards something new and exciting. Yep, I'm talking about retiring from sports. It's like that final episode of your favorite show; you know it has to end, but nobody prepared you for the weird feelings afterward. It’s normal to feel a bit lost and uncertain because retiring from sport can feel like your internal GPS suddenly says, "I have no idea where we are." You've spent years - maybe even decades - with a structured schedule, goals, and a community that understands shower economics and borderline masochism. Now Life has handed you a map in a language you can't read. And let's be real, who uses maps anymore (other than my 70-something year old dad)? Let’s go through the most common reasons transitioning out of sport is uncomfy and how to navigate each one. Identity Crisis: More Than Just an Athlete Here’s a little not-so-secret secret: You're not just an athlete and your life has purpose outside of winning; you’re a multifaceted human bean with interests as diverse as the flavors of ice cream at that fancy gelato place downtown. It's time to explore those flavors!Maybe you like baking way more than you realized and now you have the time to experiment (hello, sourdough Sundays!), or perhaps you’re finally able to go on that trip you always wanted and can now plan and save for. Exploring what makes you, you, can feel daunting…but once you get going and reassess what is actually important to you, you’ll realize that transitioning out of sport isn’t the end of a golden age - it’s a step into a brand new, totally different one of your own making. Choosing Something Else is Not a Betrayal Retiring from sport can sometimes feel like you’re turning your back on a lifelong friend. You’ve spent years dedicating yourself to your sport and gone through every up and down imaginable, you’ve had support from loved ones, coaches, teammates, and maybe even fans and brands, and now it feels like you're saying, “It's not you, it's me,” to a piece of your identity. Imagine telling your decades-old coffee machine you’re switching to tea. *awkward* Rather than “shoulding” all over yourself (“I should want to keep doing my sport in whatever capacity…right?” “I should be able to keep it up, even if only recreationally,” “I should continue to make myself and everyone else proud by exercising and ‘looking’ like an athlete,” etc.), take a beat and give yourself permission to grow in a different direction. If you decide to take a break from what you’ve been doing, it doesn’t mean you can never pick it back up again. This new chapter in your life is not one of shame, blame, and continued responsibility to your sport, but of freedom, exploration, growth, and appreciation of yourself and life and food and everything else outside of athletics! You are not betraying anyone or anything by choosing something different or hanging up your shoes for good. You are embracing the next chapter of your life, and what’s more beautiful and exciting than that? Dance to Your Body's New Tune Remember how your body was like a well-oiled machine, finely tuned for performance? Well, now it's learning to play to a different beat. Not only will the way you move your body look different, but your body will also probably look different itself. It's like going from being a heavy metal drummer to a smooth jazz saxophonist - the instrument itself and the sound it’s creating are totally different. Embrace this new rhythm. Your body might change, and that's okay! Just as your life and values are allowed to change and look different during and after the transition out of sport, so is your body. And think about it: how many hours in the gym did it take each week for your body to look like it did when you were competing? Is it realistic or enjoyable to even consider doing that the rest of your life? Didn’t think so. Get Back to Play & Joyful Movement Let's redefine exercise. Instead of going balls to the wall every day in practice, you can choose to move your body differently for a different purpose. Maybe you still want to maintain some semblance of physical prowess, but you may also choose to move to get outside, meet new people, try a new activity, or…just have fun. Literally, doing a physical activity just for shits ‘n giggles. Just because you can. Dancing in your kitchen (big fan), biking around your neighborhood, or playing tag with your dog (they always win, but hey, it's fun) are just ideas. Exercise doesn’t have to be structured; dancing in the club can be a workout if you try hard enough. You’re also free to do more dodgy types of movement - like rock climbing or BMX bike racing - because hey guess what: there’s nobody to yell at you if you twist an ankle and need to take a couple days or weeks off! Ditch the Protein Shakes & Oatmeal Now that you're not training for the Olympics, you're eating habits will change, and that's actually really fucking cool and exciting. No more body comp testing. No more worrying about timing meals and snacks around practice. No more orthorexic food choices to control your body disguised as caring about your performance and maybe health. This is easier said than done and when working with a professional (hey there!) really comes in handy. But for now, I’mma just say it: enjoy experimenting with foods that you might have avoided before. Break out of the chickenbroccolirice rut. Ditch the rice cakes for actual bread and, hell, even put some butter on it! You're eating pattern doesn’t have to be about performance or controlling your aesthetics anymore, even if you feel a strong urge to do so; it's about enjoyment and nourishment and enjoying what you’re eating is just as important as what you’re eating. Find Your People Remember your team? The ones who knew exactly how you liked your energy gels and always got you your fave running socks for your birthday? It's time to find your new squad. They might be in a book club, a gardening group, or a virtual workshop designed specifically for retired athletes (omg how convenient?!). It’s like swiping right on new friendships - which you can literally do if you download Bumble BFF, but that’s not for everyone. Look for communities that align with your new interests and values - I promise they’re out there, but it takes time and effort to find them. It’s like playing musical chairs with social groups until you find your new spot. Also, just because you’re not in the game doesn’t mean you can’t be in the loop. Stay in touch and figure out how to maintain and grow friendships outside of being in the trenches of sport together. Also totally understandable if you didn’t vibe with your teammates and you’re ready to move on! Stop, Drop, & Feel It's totally normal to feel like you’re on a rollercoaster of emotions. One day you miss the adrenaline of walking into a packed arena, and the next you’re thrilled to have the simple pleasure of sleeping in. Just like everything else, every emotion will pass. But you have to open yourself to feeling it first. Talking it through with fellow retiring/retired athletes who feel similarly or seeking professional support are great ways to feel heard, seen, understood, and not like a total crazy person. Navigating sports retirement is a journey filled with unknowns, but it's also a chance to rediscover yourself and go on new adventures. It’s okay to mourn the loss of your athlete identity while also being excited about the future. Change is the only constant, and with change comes growth. Embrace this new chapter with the same passion you had on the field, court, track, mat, rink, in the pool, etc. and remember, life's too short not to try the weird-flavored gelato!
Binge eating

While a lot of emphasis in sports nutrition is on eating enough, and for good reason, there’s not a whole lot of conversation around one of the biggest side effects of not eating in adequate and satisfying ways: binge eating. It’s uncomfy to experience, and it’s even more uncomfy to talk about. If you're a current or retired athlete reading this, I want you to know that: You are not alone. There are very valid reasons for binges, both physiological and psychological. Sometimes efforts to be “dedicated” and “disciplined” with your food can backfire - and that is not your fault. Binge eating is not the same as overeating. An instance of binge eating, according to the DSM-V, is defined as: Eating, in a discrete period of time (e.g., within any 2-hour period), an amount of food that is definitely larger than what most people would eat in a similar period of time under similar circumstances. A sense of lack of control overeating (e.g., a feeling that one cannot stop eating or control what or how much one is eating). An instance of binge eating is also associated with at least three of the following: Eating much more rapidly than normal. Eating until feeling uncomfortably full. Eating large amounts of food when not feeling physically hungry. Eating alone because of feeling embarrassed by how much one is eating. Feeling disgusted with oneself, depressed, or very guilty afterward. While about 2% of the general population is believed to experience binge eating disorder, research suggests at least 10% of NCAA Division 1 student-athletes experience binge eating at least once a week. To put that into perspective, at least 12 out of the 120 people on my collegiate track and field team in college were experiencing binges on a weekly basis, if not more. One of them was definitely me, and I remember how confused, disappointed, frustrated, and, worst of all, alone I felt about it. When we think about it from an objective standpoint though, it actually makes TOTAL FUCKING SENSE that athletes experience binge eating as often as they do. Let’s break it down: Real or perceived dietary restrictions intended to improve performance. “Restriction” doesn’t necessarily mean eating 1200 calories a day. It can mean avoiding certain foods because of the belief that they’re “unhealthy” or will negatively impact performance, weight, or body composition. These certain foods tend to be ones that taste really fucking good. And avoiding them can lead to feelings of deprivation and subsequently trigger binge eating. Weight and body composition requirements or expectations. Body weight and composition are just TWO of FORTY factors that have been shown to impact performance . Weight class sports like wrestling, boxing, rowing, etc. literally have body weight requirements for athletes in different positions. So does football, though in a more “casual” sense - while there aren’t defined weight classes or categories to compete in like the others, there are definitely body weight expectations depending on the position being played. “Lean” sports like endurance sports, dance, figure skating, etc. put immense pressure on being lean and equate leanness with fitness - which is entirely inaccurate and very damaging to athletes’ mental health as well as long-term performance potential . Performance pressure. For student-athletes, pressure to perform both on and off the field can lead to immense stress, especially if scholarships are riding on athletic and/or academic performance. If left unchecked and without appropriate coping tools, this stress can trigger binge eating in an effort to self-soothe. Body comparisons to other athletes (in addition to non-athletes, especially in media). “If I look like them, then I’ll perform like them” is a thought that crosses most athletes’ minds at some point. Athletes are in more situations where comparisons are almost impossible to avoid - competing necessitates comparison, uniforms can be objectifying and bring more attention to one’s body, and the media has a weird obsession with criticizing female athletes’ bodies . Feelings of inadequacy and body dissatisfaction can lead to pressure and stress which increased risk of bingeing. Restricting food intake or exercising to compensate for food eaten can lead to increased hunger and cravings which also increase risk of binge eating. Comparisons are inevitable; what’s more important is how we respond to them. Injuries and off seasons. Periods of injury or reduced training can lead to concerns about weight gain and body image, which may trigger binge eating behaviors. If athletes tend to eat very rigidly while in season, the off season can feel like a very extended “cheat day.” If athletes feel like they miss out on tasty food while they’re training and competing, being injured or having more time and freedom during the off season can feel like prime time to “make up” for all the food that was missed the previous season, and to “prepare” for anticipated rigid eating patterns once they’re back in season. Nutrition (mis)information provided by coaches & other athletes. Athletes hold their coaches and teammates (especially high-performing teammates) in very high regard. If these very well-respected support people give biased or incorrect nutrition information, athletes can develop irrational fears around certain foods and nutrients which can lead to unnecessary restriction and, consequently, binge eating. Athletic career transitions (in addition to life transitions or retirement from sport). Transitions are generally extremely stressful for anyone, which inherently increases risk of binge eating as a coping mechanism. To a competitive athlete, sport is life; when anything about it changes, it can feel like a crisis. And food can be the one constant amidst the chaos. Unrestricted or significantly increased access to food. College cafeterias, training tables, fueling stations - the landscape of collegiate fueling has definitely evolved! This is awesome because it means more resources provided to athletes to ensure access to adequate nutrition. It can also be overwhelming and daunting to have such extensive access to foods, especially if there was limited access previously due to financial insecurity, overly-controlling “almond moms,” or restrictive eating habits prior to starting college. So, binge eating kind of makes sense when you consider all of these factors, right? Once you have the awareness, understanding, and affirmation, the next question is: “Now what?” …which will be explored in another blog post!
holiday meal

Picture this: you just started your intuitive eating journey and are exploring food freedom, giving yourself permission to have foods you really enjoy and rarely eat, without guilt. The 1-2 weeks around Christmas/New Year’s held so many fun foods for you and you’re so happy that you were able to enjoy some of your faves with minimal/no guilt or compensatory workouts to “make up” for it! But now you’re “back to reality” and, while you were able to keep the judgy thoughts away in the moment, they come rushing back. If you’re thinking… “That was fun and all, but now it’s time to get back on track.” “Should I really have eaten that much?” “I definitely could have made better choices.” “I really over-indulged.” “I ate like shit.” “Why did I let myself go like that?” “Does unconditional permission to eat mean over-stuffing myself the whole time?” “Maybe I just can’t be trusted around food.” “The idea of food freedom and listening to my body is nice and all, but maybe it’s just not for me.” STOP RIGHT THERE! You’re experiencing what I like to call a post-holiday emotional hangover: while you were able to give yourself permission to have foods that you enjoyed in the moment over the holidays, all the guilt, shame, fear of weight gain, and panic you managed to quell in the last couple of weeks all of a sudden comes rushing back and hits you like a train. If this is the first time you’ve practiced food freedom over the holidays in a while, this reaction actually makes a lot of sense. When was the last time you actually felt like you could trust yourself around food, especially during the holidays? How many opportunities have you had to practice unconditional permission to eat, mindful eating, food neutrality, and being a compassionate voice of reassurance and nurturance for yourself? Probably not many. So of course, the holidays felt uncomfy - not because you did anything wrong, but because it was different from what you’re used to. Any time we step outside our comfort zone, there’s bound to be some discomfort. But that is not synonymous with failure. And, contrary to the panicky thoughts you may be having, rebounding to past restrictive behaviors, diets, and military-grade exercise regimes are not the answer! Let’s think of a different yet similar example. If you celebrated anything this winter, were you around any kids? Did they get toys? Were there any they wanted for a long time or were really excited about? How much did they play with them? If you weren’t around kids, do you remember how you felt when you got those extra-special gifts that one day or week out of the year? Of course they were exciting - maybe your friends already had that certain toy you wanted, you’d seen it in online or in stores, you imagined what it would be like playing with it, or you waited ALL YEAR for it - how could you not be chomping at the bit to finally open this present?! Fast forward several months. I’d bet that, more than likely, that same toy you couldn’t get enough of was now tucked away with all your other toys. Nothing super special about it, because you got everything you wanted out of it. You could play with it whenever you wanted, so you did. But eventually, the excitement and pleasure wore off as time wore on. How do you think that experience would have changed if you were only allowed to play with that toy for one week over the holiday season? What if, in the new year, you weren’t allowed to play with it again until the next holiday celebration? You’d probably be sad, feel like you were missing out, and find ways to sneak the toy when nobody was looking. Now think about how this applies to food - those foods that are especially reserved for the holiday season. Or your birthday. Or Valentine's day. Is the next best step to cure this hangover to cut down on those satisfying, “indulgent” foods, and pretend like they don’t exist? ORRR does it make more sense to try and start incorporating these foods more often so that they can become more neutral? The process of eating a food continuously, and thus decreasing strong emotional ties to it, has been researched and even has a name: habituation. It explains why including more delicious foods more often - NOT avoiding them or keeping them out of the house - can actually help us not lose our shit around them! So, if you’re feeling the hangover this year, I get it. There are valid reasons for this. And while your knee jerk reaction may be to become a mean, lean, clean food hermit, your emotions and body may actually be telling you that you have an opportunity to continue improving your relationship with food!
